Get to Know Me!

Hello
My name is Michael Stone, and I run the Step Ahead Development Program!
I am really passionate about the way sports teach some of life's most valuable lessons. I have been involved in team sports my entire life, and I honestly couldn't imagine it any other way. Sport, especially soccer, has always been there for me and has played a key role in many of my most pivotal moments. It has given me everything I have today, and I would not be the person I am today without it. I look forward to helping you find ways that sport can impact your life and give you far more than you put in.

My journey
My College career
Year 1: Amherst College (DIII). In and out of the starting lineup. Started in the NCAA tournament as a true freshman.

Year 2: Amherst College (DIII). Played in four games. Freshman came in and started over me. First time I was ever on the bench.

Year 3: Boston University (DI). Transferred to Boston University. Started in 15/17 games.

Year 4: Boston University (DI). COVID shortened the season to four games. I played in two and was injured for two.

Year 5: Boston University (DI). Started year on bench. Left school for family emergency. Red-shirted season.

Year 6: University of Connecticut (DI). Started season on bench. Got opportunity and started 10/10 Big East games. Stepped up as team leader; best college season for me.

Reflecting on it all
In the craziest way possible, college soccer was everything I hoped and dreamed it would be, but it was nothing like I had imagined. There are so many parts of my story where it may seem like things were completely falling off the rails, but it never felt like that to me because I was doing what I loved, and I was giving it everything I had. There were certainly times when I felt frustrated, upset, and tired, but I came to realize that this was all part of my dream. Kobe Bryant said it best: "those times when you get up early and you work hard, those times when you stay up late and you work hard, those times when you don't feel like working, you're too tired, you don't want to push yourself, but you do anyway, that actually is the dream." I could not agree any more.

I feel very thankful for everyone who played a role in helping me live out my dream of playing college soccer; there are far too many people to thank. A special thank you goes out to my family who always supported me and had my back through poor performances, transfer situations, missed vacations, and all else. Thank you to my coaches, even the ones I did not always see eye-to-eye with. You helped me demand more of myself and ultimately helped shape me into the young man I am today. To all the trainers, support staff, and people behind the scenes who made it all possible for me, thank you. My energy and effort is now fully focused on helping the next generation reach the top. Let's go!

The idea for the program came to me when I was getting breakfast with my goalkeeper coach, Ronald Garces, in November, 2022. I had just come off my last season at UConn, and I was thinking about what was next. I told him that I didn't think I had much more in the tank playing-wise and that I wanted to find a way to stay connected to the game that I love. It didn't take me long for the ideas to start flowing.

I have always been interested in the college process. My brother, Alexander, was the Valedictorian at his high school with a perfect ACT score. I personally oversaw his applications, especially the one that landed him at Harvard University. I have been directly involved in college soccer for the past five and a half years as a player, and I have spent the last six months reflecting on what it took for me to do what I wanted. I have been gathering all my resources, connections, and knowledge to provide to the kids in my program. Thank you very much for taking the time to read more about me, and I look forward to seeing where this program takes me ... and all of you for that matter!
